Second Half Rush Leads to Saints Victory | Schools
CLINTON, Iowa--Entering the evening on a two-game losing streak, the Ashford University men's basketball team needed a spark. They found one Monday night.Senior forward Vesteinn Sveinsson drained nine-of-eleven shots from the floor and hit all four free throw attempts, scoring 22 points to lead Ashford past its bitter rival, St. Ambrose University, 76-67 in a Monday night clash inside Lee Lohman Arena. The contest is the first of three meetings between the two sides this season.
The Akranes, Iceland-native also led AU with eight rebounds and got help on the offensive front from sophomore guard DeAndre Lowery Jr., who scored 19 points on 13-of-16 shooting from the charity stripe. East Moline, Ill.-native Damon Overton and point guard Brandon Weston each chipped in eight points.
"To play in an atmosphere like this, coming to Davenport and winning, gave our guys a great boost," Head Coach Oliver Drake said following the clash. "We know you can't put a price tag on a win and we know how beneficial this will be for our program down the road."
AU shot 50% (25-of-50) from the floor and made 21-of-30 (71.9%) attempts from the free throw line, with most of the free attempts coming in the waning moments of the game. Although Ashford was outrebounded, 37-31, the Saints forced St. Ambrose into 22 turnovers including 10 from guard Nick Frazier, last season's Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) Newcomer of the Year.
